Annual Flat Cap Course Walk and Brew

Posted on 25 February 2026Share

Wetherby Racecourse are delighted to announce they are once again hosting a  Flat Cap Course Walk & Brew on Friday 20th March 2026.

Wetherby Racecourse are delighted to announce they are once again hosting a  Flat Cap Course Walk & Brew on Friday 20th March 2026.

March is Brain Tumour Awareness month, and the Flat Cap Course Walk  & Brew comes one week prior to Wetherby’s annual Wear a Hat Raceday on Friday 27th March.

Flat Cap Brews, are an initiative of Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity (YBTC), aiming to get people to come together across the County to raise awareness.

The Team at Wetherby Racecourse would like as many people as possible to come along and walk the course with them on Friday 20th March, and stay for a cuppa and a chat afterwards.

Those that attend can tread the hallowed turf, with our Clerk of the Course and Head Groundsman, who will be explaining the annual maintenance routine and work that goes into making racedays happen.  You will stop by our imposing Steeplechase fences and see how they are built and on the way back in we will take a look at the new Foam padded hurdles that we have started using this season.  We may even get time to pop inside to take a look at racing’s integrity areas, such as Commentary and Judges box and Weighing Room.  This is a fantastic opportunity to get a real Behind the Scenes look.

There is no fee to attend and join in on the day; but we will be requesting donations on the day which will all go to Yorkshire’s Brain Tumour Charity.

Michelle Campbell, General Manager at Wetherby Racecourse said “We have held this event now for several years and some who attend come every year, as they find it so interesting; we even had a couple last year who travelled all the way from Liverpool to visit; they are avid racegoers, and were here racing with us the meeting previously, they saw the event advertised so just thought they would join in; and they thoroughly enjoyed getting to walk the track and learn about how we make the fences and hurdles”

Last year, the Flat Cap Course Walk donations, and money  raised during our Wear a Hat Raceday, through the raffle and exit collection totalled £7,000 — an incredible contribution to a truly amazing cause. Events like this show the real power of a community coming together — every hat worn and every step taken makes such a difference.

Wetherby Racecourse are a long-standing supporter of Brain Tumour Awareness Month and hold their annual ‘Wear a Hat Raceday’ on Friday 27th March, when they encourage racegoers to wear hats, the sillier the better, to raise awareness and for fun, giving spot prizes out to hats they particularly like.  A charity raffle takes place on the day run by volunteers from YBTC, who have a private area at the Racecourse on the day to allow their support team to chat to anyone who is or has been affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.

YBTC offer support to patients and their loved ones through the devastation a primary brain tumour diagnosis can bring, making sure they have someone to turn to at any stage of their journey, while funding innovative research across Yorkshire to find better treatments and ultimately a cure.  Every day one person in Yorkshire is told they have a Brain Tumour, which is now the biggest cancer killer of people aged 40 and under in the UK.’
